History:
David started his
racing career in 1992 running go-karts in NC, SC, VA, GA, and FL. He raced for 6
years which included 5 winning season in the WKA. During these years he won
Junior Stock Championship, Stock Lite Championship, Stock Medium Championship,
and the Super Stock Championship.
In 1997 David started racing in the Allison Legacy Series and
finished 7th, in the North Carolina Region, after only running 10 of the 25
scheduled races. During this year David finished 3rd at Martinsville, VA and
also set the track record at Orange County Speedway for the Allison Legacy Cars
on June 14. The next year was even better for the Triplett Racing team in the
Allison Legacy Series; winning the North Carolina Series Championship that
included 3 National Touring Event wins.
David then decided in 1999 to make the move to the Late Model Stock Car Division
and with a car given to him by Bobby "Pops" Gullie. With Orange County
Speedway to be his home track with drivers like; Barry Beggarly, Maurice Hill,
Scott Riggs, David Blankenship, and Richard Landreth, David was in for a very
sharp learning curve in the LMSC Division from some of the best in the
business. David was able to finish his first season 12th in OCS points and
ready to take on the 2000 season.
The 2000 season continued to see David racing at OCS, but preparing to make
the field for the Taco Bell 300 in Martinsville, VA by buying a new race car
from Rick Townsend and Townsend Race Cars. David had another strong year at OCS
by winning a pole and finishing 9th in the points standing for the year. The
highlight of the year came at Martinsville Speedway with David putting his #00
Triplett's Towing Pontiac Grand-Prix on the outside of the third row, sixth (6),
for the Taco Bell 300. This was no easy task since there were 128 LMSC from all
over the Eastern Mid-Atlantic United States. David ran strong through the first
part of the race, but was involved in a crash right before the halfway point of
the race. David finished 30th but he knew that this was a step in the right
direction for himself and the David Triplett Racing team. With the momentum of
Martinsville, David attempted to make the 8th Annual Myrtle Beach 400 at the
Myrtle Beach Speedway in Myrtle Beach, SC. This time David qualified 11th out of
108 LMSC. After going one lap down during the race David finished 14th. With a
strong ending to the 2000 season the Triplett Racing team was feeling good about
the up and coming 2001 season.
Also in 2000, David graduated from Rowan Cabarrus Community College with an
Associate in Applied Science - Motorsports Management Technology degree. While
in school, David was awarded the Jeremy Mayfield Motorsports Scholarship. The
award was presented to him at the Charlotte (Lowes) Motor Speedway during
pre-race activities for the Coca Cola 600 and included VIP pit passes for the
race.
2001 was a break out
year for the dtr team with 6 LMSC wins and 5 poles including the pole and a win
in the prestigious end of season Bailey’s Fall Classic 325 at Orange County
Speedway and the pole for the Sleep Inn 400 at Myrtle Beach Speedway.
2002 was another winning season with 7 LMSC wins and an impressive 13 poles.
2002 saw David win a pole and race at Southern National Speedway and the pole
for Labor Day Bobby Isaac Memorial 200 at Hickory Motor Speedway. The highlight
of the season was the Taco Bell 300 at Martinsville Speedway.
David captured the pole, out-running 112 other drivers for the top starting
position for the biggest Late Model Stock event of the season. On Sunday, he
was running 3rd at half way and felt he had a good shot at the win after the
crew made adjustments to the car. However, on lap 147 he developed a problem
with a valve stem that caused a flat tire and lost laps in the pits. He was
able to make up one lap and was running 12th when he slowed to avoid a last lap
wreck at the checkered flag and got hit from behind just short of the finish
line, finishing 14th. David qualified for the pole and led 185 laps
of the Bailey’s Halloween Classic at Orange County Speedway. Lap traffic
shuffled the leaders and David finished in 3rd place.
Another good run at the Myrtle Beach 250 starting 6th out of 83 cars
and finishing a strong 8th.
2003 saw David winning one race, finishing 2nd in 6 races and in the
top five14 times this season.
2004 was a transition year for the dtr team with the closing of Orange County
Speedway and moving into their new race shop. The team raced the first half of
the season at Myrtle Beach, finishing in the top 5 nearly every race. The #00
made a debut at the NASCAR café in Myrtle Beach, being on display before the
race. The second half of the season saw the team at South Boston Speedway with
an occasional visit to Southern National, again with solid top 5 runs.
In 2004 David married Lauren Pope of Cedar Grove and moved to Timberlake, NC.
In 2005 David was accepted into the Durham Fire Academy and graduated in July
2005 as a firefighter for the City of Durham. With the Academy schedule and his
work schedule, David was not able to race a full schedule this year. However,
any free Saturday found the team back at South Boston with two poles, including
the pole for the Bailey’s 200, three 2nd place finishes and some
strong runs including leading 140 of 150 laps in the September 17th
event. The team finished 11th in points for the season without
running the entire schedule of races.
The 2006 season has David back to a full racing schedule. We are excited to
have added Bailey’s as a primary sponsor and grateful that Ken Smith is with us
again this year with the Wynn’s Pro Chem sponsorship. Ken has been with David
since the early days of Allison Legacy racing and is a huge part of our
success. Orange County Speedway has reopened and will be David’s home track.
He will also be running at South Boston and Southern National in events that do
not conflict with OCS schedule.
2007
finds David racing a full schedule at South Boston Speedway with frequent
visits to OCS for the 150 lap races. He will also compete at Martinsville
and Myrtle Beach Speedway later in the year. We are grateful to have
Bailey's back as a primary sponsor as well as Ken Smith in his new business
line. A-1 Auto Parts in Durham has also joined our sponsor team as an
associate sponsor.
The big news this year is in David's personal life as he and wife, Lauren, are
expecting their first child, a girl, in early May.
