Race Summary

Bailey’s 310
June 30, 2001

The heavenly blues above started the night off perfect for the Bailey’s 310, at Orange County Speedway on June 30, 2001. Twenty-six roaring engines qualified for the event with Sandy Stigall’s, Wayne Patterson sitting on the pole with a fast time of 14.740.

Wilders Inc. Deac McCaskill started on the outside pole, with Bailey’s own Scott Kirkpatrick in third. Points leader Frank Deiny Jr. in fourth, Richard Landreth’s Clarence’s Steakhouse fifth, David Triplett’s Wynns’ in sixth, Durham Harley Davidson’s Barry Beggarly, Chambers Auto of Mike Chambers, Chad Kendrick’s Ford, and Jason Gullie’s Wynn’s Pontiac filling in the rest of the top ten for 200 lapper.

Twenty-six cars bring out the green flag at OCS, with Deac McCaskill charging his black and neon green Chevrolet to the lead. Battles begin early with Landreth and Deiny rolling door to door in two, for the fourth position. Beggarly’s Harley Davidson Chevrolet rides behind the two in sixth. Deiny starts to gain positive ground on Landreth off of four. With Beggarly on his bumper, Deiny moves on as well as the black #82 on lap 4. Landreth slides back to the sixth position.

On lap 5 Triplett pilots his Pontiac to the inside of Landreth in three. A lap later pulling neck and neck, with the Chambers Auto Chevrolet of Chambers watching from their rear. Triplett falls back in line, while Gullie tries to pull off a pass on Chambers in the middle of three and four. Chambers takes charge of the situation on lap 9, holding his position.

While the field settles out the Wilders Inc #08 of Deac McCaskill breaks away from the field by five car lengths. With twenty-six cars on the track, it doesn’t take long for McCaskill to catch the rear of the field on lap 21.

The first caution of the night comes on lap 24 when Eric Clapp’s #98 gets together with the #19 of Jeff Owens. The two spin together, door to door, coming off of four making slight contact with each other. Owens reports to the pits for the crew to look over his red machine, while Bo Foust parks his Cheerwine #17 for the remaining of the night.

McCaskill brings the field around to recapture the green flag on lap 30 with Patterson, Kirkpatrick, Deiny, Beggarly, Landreth, Triplett, Chambers, Gullie, and Dease round out the top ten. Clapp, Mullins, Gray, Ziglar, Collins, Kendrick, Cook, Hill, Lawson, Stovall, Clapp, and Owens set the rest of the field.

The front two of McCaskill and Patterson get an awesome jump on the field separating distance. Back in seventh Triplett tries once more to pass the Landreth machine in the middle of one and two. This time the #00 Pontiac of Triplett completes the pass in three and four. Landreth doesn’t give up yet when he dives back under Triplett coming off of four pulling door to door. Triplett finishes the pass on lap 37.

Around lap 50 McCaskill and Patterson ride chain linked from McCaskill’s bumper to Patterson’s front end. Kirkpatrick, Deiny, and Beggarly ride in a trio, while Triplett and Landreth run together. A lap later points leader, Deiny, puts his David Westcott Pontiac to the bumper of Kirkpatrick’s Bailey’s Chevrolet. Beggarly sits in his Chevrolet not that far behind the two.

Mr. Excitement, Jimmy Mullins, brings his Mabe Trucking Chevrolet into the pits for the night on lap 59.

The engine behind Wayne Patterson slowly starts to reel in the Wilders Inc. #08 of Deac McCaskill, on lap 65. While a little further back in the field Deiny looks to the inside of Kirkpatrick coming off two, but falls back in line coming into three and four.

The lead is up for grabs when Patterson dips to the inside of McCaskill on lap 76, in the middle of one and two. McCaskill holds his lead on the backstretch, when he breaks from
Patterson’s Chevy. But the Pontiac of Deiny still hasn’t given up. Chevy verse Pontiac down the front straightaway. The Pontiac of Deiny heads on leaving Kirkpatrick in fourth, until Beggarly passes the Bailey’s #52 as well.

On lap 81 Patterson brings his Chevrolet back to the side of McCaskill. With Patterson on the inside, McCaskill can’t hold on. The Sandy Stigall #90 takes the lead for the first time of the night, coming into three with the help of the lapped car Eric Clapp.

On the move is the #00 Pontiac of Triplett. By lap 96, Triplett pulls to the inside of Kirkpatrick coming off of four. This time Triplett falls back in line on the backstretch. A couple of laps later the Wynn’s Pontiac charges back, and slides up to the fifth position, leaving Kirkpatrick in sixth.

The field reports to single file around lap 113. Lap cars throughout the field become a major part for cars on the lead lap to pass or gain ground on the competition behind.

The second caution of the night comes out on lap 117 when Glenn Stovall’s #8 GMAC Chevrolet, collides with the outside turn four wall. Stovall suffers major right front damage. Caution laps do not count, which brings Patterson even closer to victory. While under the caution, Cook and Davis report to their pits for adjustments. The Brann’s Wrecker Service carries off Stovall’s battered machine.

Patterson takes the green on lap 126 with the lapped car of Maurice Hill sitting between him and McCaskill’s Chevrolet. Deiny, Beggarly, Triplett, Kirkpatrick, Landreth, Gullie, and Chambers fill in the top ten.

The Sandy Stigall Chevrolet shoots off like a rocket, causing Patterson to get an excellent jump on the field. Before Patterson knows it, the third caution comes out. Keith Clapp’s #36
Clapp’s Nursing Home Chevrolet loops around, coming close to making contact with the inside pit wall.

The green is thrown for the Late Model’s of Orange County Speedway on lap 134. The Timberlake Shell #04 of Ryan Gray, is a lapped car that sits between Patterson and McCaskill. McCaskill has the hardest time getting around Gray, this causing Patterson to break away even further from McCaskill and the rest of the field. Finally on lap 139, McCaskill clears Gray when he moves to the bottom of the track to let the lead cars move on.

Bad luck falls for Scott Kirkpatrick’s Bailey’s Chevrolet on lap 139, when he pulls his machine into the pits after losing a cylinder.

Deiny charges to the front once more on lap 141, when he peaks to the inside of McCaskill in three and four. A lap later he pulls neck and neck with the black and neon green of McCaskill, but McCaskill can’t hold off the power of Deiny. The Westcott Pontiac completes the pass coming off of four, with Beggarly following in his tracks.

Everyone rides single file for awhile, until Triplett looks to the inside of the Wilders Inc. #08 of McCaskill, on lap 150. Triplett slides back in line, but doesn’t stop there. He tries to push the Pontiac pass the Chevrolet, but can’t quite hold it.

Towards the end of the night, the score board cuts off not showing the top three positions, and the completed laps.

The last caution of the night comes on lap 176 when the #38 of Rob Ziglar, loops around in turn fours apron.

Wayne Patterson takes the checkered flag on the 200th lap for the Bailey’s 310. Points leader Frank Deiny Jr. comes in second, Barry Beggarly third, Deac McCaskill fourth, David Triplett Jr., Jason Gullie, Terry Dease, Richard Landreth, Rodney Cook, and Mike Chambers round out the top ten positions.

Steve Collins, Chuck Lawson, Keith Clapp, Rob Ziglar, Eric Clapp, Mike Frate, Maurice Hill, Ryan Gray, Scott Kirkpatrick, Cliff Davis, Glenn Stovall, Chad Kendrick, Stephen Grimes, Jeff Owens, Jimmy Mullins, and Bo Foust fill in the rest of the field.
