Race Summary
Durham’s Triplett wins OCS race
March 30, 2002
The "Silver Bullet" made it to the front Saturday night at Orange County
Speedway.
Durham’s David Triplett, Jr. inherited the lead when pole-winner Timothy
Peters of Providence was black-flagged on lap 34 of the 125-lap NASCAR
Weekly Racing Series Late Model Stock Car Division event.
Once he got the lead, Triplett held on the entire way to score his first
win of the season in the second race of the year at the 3/8th-mile
asphalt oval in Rougemont. The Late Model Stock Car Division race was
the featured attraction of the Farmer’s Supply Oyster Bar and Grill of
Roxboro 240.
For the second straight week, Peters earned the pole position after
turning a qualifying lap of 14.408 seconds. He owned the top spot until
being black-flagged because of making contact with the lapped car of
Durham’s Chris Herndon, which went spinning in the backstretch. Peters
was sent to the rear of the field and later broke a hub and wound up in
15th place. Before having the hub problem, Peters was trying to rally
from the rear of the lead lap pack. He worked his way back to second
place by lap 78 before heading to the pit area four laps later. After
getting to the front, Triplett never was seriously challenged. By the
end of the race, he enjoyed a lead of a half lap.
Barry Beggarly of Pelham finished second in the 18-car field, while
Wayne Grubb of Mechanicsville, Va., placed third. Scott Kirkpatrick of
Burlington finished fourth and was the final driver on the lead lap at
the end. Oxford’s Terry Dease rounded out the top five.
